What Are the Advent Colors?

Years ago, I served as an aide in a Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Atrium — the Montessori of religious education and, in my humble opinion, the best RE ever.

One of the simple songs we taught the children went:

“Purple and green and red and white
Are the colors of the year!
Purple and green and red and white
Remind us of the Light!
Purple is for preparation
White is for celebration
Green is for the growing time
Red is for Pentecost.”

If you’ve ever wondered why Father wears purple during Advent, you’re not alone! Every color the Church uses carries meaning — little homilies for the heart.

💜 Violet (Purple): Preparation & Royalty

Purple is the main Advent color. It reminds us to pause, reflect, and make room for Jesus — and to honor the coming King. Even a simple purple table runner can create lasting memories.

🌸 Rose (Pink): Joy

Rose marks Gaudete Sunday, the third Sunday of Advent. “Rejoice!” — the Church’s way of cheering us on as we near Christmas.

❄️ White & Gold: Celebration

While technically for Christmas, these colors symbolize purity, glory, and Christ’s dazzling light.

Bring these colors into your home through wreaths, decorations, or kids’ projects, and let them softly speak: Hope. Joy. Jesus is coming.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Jesse Tree an Advent Calendar?

Yes and no—the Jesse Tree isn’t a typical Advent calendar with treats or doors, but it does mark the days to Christmas through Scripture, symbols, and stories that prepare hearts for Christ.

How to Keep Christ in the Center of Christmas?

You keep Christ in the center of Christmas by following the Church’s rhythm—preparing in Advent, celebrating the full 12 days of Christmas through prayer and tradition, and letting gratitude and service guide your family. This way, the season becomes not about stress or consumerism, but about welcoming Christ into your home and heart.

What is Advent?

Advent is a season of anticipation and preparation for Jesus’ coming, observed by slowing down, praying, reflecting on Scripture, and embracing small, meaningful family traditions that focus on Christ.
